I didn’t believe that there were any surprises left in the classic B&W ISO 400/27 film market then Rollei brings out a new emulsion that becomes my all time favourite after just a few rolls.
The first surprise was after the first estimated development time. With HC-110 dilution B, at 20ºC and 9' 30’’ the medium tones were consistently falling within densitometer readings of 0,70 to 0,75 over the base + veil. That's a good start
The next step was scanning the negative in a quite old Polaroid scanner. I've found that the images produced in automatic mode have far more detail in the whole range than I've previously been able to achieve with many other excellent films. Frankly speaking, I wasn't expecting this kind of improvement.
Enlarging held more pleasant surprises. The 135 negative enlarged up to 16x12 had, in addition to those qualities already mentioned in the scanning stage, very light grain looking at the print from a meter away and at the same time it has a beautiful structure viewed close up.
The only problems I've found so far are the lack of technical documentation beyond that printed on the back of the product label and a lack of translation into English at the very least.
It's a very well balanced film with excellent response across the whole tonal range and particularly good response at both ends of the tonal range. It is very easy to scan, has fine grain and handles difficult lighting very well. Personally I find it combines many of the qualities of HP-5+, APX400 and the old Tri-X Pan in one emulsion and additionally, it exhibits some features of high technology emulsions. Rollei have done an excellent job with this product and have convinced me to stay with it.

Cuando se piensa que ya pocas sorpresas le esperan a uno detrás de una pelicula ISO 400/27 para blanco y negro de corte clásico, va y se encuentra con una película que le trastoca un tanto los esquemas hasta el punto de adoptarla como nueva favorita al cabo de unos pocos rollos.
La primera sorpresa fue que tras un primer tiempo de revelado estimado en 9' 30'' en la dilución B de HC-110 a 20º C los tonos medios en el densitómetro se clavaron consistentemente entre 0,70 y 0,75 sobre la base más velo. Buen comienzo.
Paso el negativo por el escáner (un Polaroid bastante antiguo) encontrando que la imagen reconocida con los parámetros en automático contiene más de detalle a lo largo de toda la escala tonal de lo que he obtenido nunca con otras excelentes películas. Otra cosa que francamente no esperaba.
Paso a la ampliadora, tiro un 30x40 desde el negativo de 135 encontrando que a las características previsibles por la digitalización se le une un grano nada acusado contemplando la copia con los brazos extendidos, pero de muy bella estructura si nos acercamos más.
Los únicos problemas que le he encontrado es la falta -por el momento- de mayor documentación técnica que la del reverso de las etiquetas y una traducción al menos al inglés.
En conclusión, se trata de una película muy bien equilibrada, con una respuesta excelente en toda la gama tonal (incluso sorprendente en los extremos), de gran facilidad de digitalización, grano fino para su sensibilidad y muy buena respuesta con luces difíciles. Personalmente encuentro que esta emulsión aúna las características que prefería de la HP-5+, APX400 y la antigua Tri-X Pan a la vez que aporta algunas características de las emulsiones de alta tecnología; me ha convencido plenamente.

Estos días estoy reeditando un trabajito de hace 3 años tirado con Agfa APX 400 y me ha apetecido muchísimo volver a tirar BN, así que me he animado y he comprado un par de cajas de Rollei Retro 400.
